Intellectual Property Rights
Libel - you could face a lawsuit if the media product is produced containing information about someone which is untrue or damaging to their reputation. This can be in written form, imagery use or radio broadcast.
Data Protection Act
- if you collect data about individuals during the creation of a media product then the DPA must be adhered to or you could face a lawsuit.
- UK law
- 8 principles:
1) requires the data subjects consent
2) should only be kept for the reason it was collected
3) accurate
4) up to date
5) should only be kept for as long as its needed
6) should be made available to the customer
7) should be processed securely
8) should be processed within the UK
Copyright, Designs and Patents Act - if you have created a piece of music, recording, image, broadcast, film or written piece of work then you have complete control of how other people use it.
Slander - carries same legal implications as libel and involves making a false statement in the spoken word
Human Rights
- the values that keeps society fair, just and equal
- protects EVERYONE
- after world war II they started 'European convention of human right' - rights to life, liberty and freedom of expression
- In 1998 UK parliament passed the human rights acts, made human rights part of UK law.
- IP law
- 4 main types:
- trademarks -
-used by businesses to protect brands
- register to various geographic regions
- needs renewing every 10 years
- copyright -
- photos, documents, websites
- Use copyright symbols when u create something
- Lasts 70 years after your lifetime
- design rights -
- furniture, jewellery, clothes
- way your product looks
- need to register your design so it can't be copied
- patents -
- if you invent a new product
- detailed description of the design
- last for up to 20 years
- register but its complicated and expensive

Example: Katie Hopkins war memorial
Data protection act:
Explanation: if you collect data about individuals during the creation of a media product then the DPA must be adhered to or you could face a lawsuit.
Application to media: Some information may be unable to be shared to the media, need to have their data protected
Example:
Copyright, design and patents act 1988:
Explanation: if you have created a piece of music, recording, image, broadcast, film or written piece of work then you have complete control of how other people use it.
Application to media: Copyright of your song can't be played in youtube videos
Example: Your youtube video can be taken down if a song is used without consent
